autism

According to the CDC, about 1 in 36 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with Autism. Dr. Padron utilizes a neurodivergent affirming approach, celebrating differences in how individuals learn, think, and interact while helping autistic individual adopt skills that can help them thrive and succeed in life.

What are symptoms of autism?

Symptoms of autism vary based on a variety of factors (e.g. age, gender, comorbidities, environmental variables etc.). Autism is characterized as a spectrum of neurodivergent characteristics including:

  • Deficits in social communication

  • Difficulties in back-and-forth conversation

  • Minimal or limited eye contact when socializing

  • Issues with nonverbal communication such as: body language, gestures, and facial expressions

  • Trouble maintaining or developing relationships

  • Intense fixed interests/hobbies

  • Repetitive motor movements or vocalizations

  • Difficulty adjusting to change

  • Insistence on sameness

  • Sensitivities to sounds, smells, or physical sensations

how is autism diagnosed?

Autism is diagnosed via a standardized assessment called the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). Dr. Padron is trained in administering this test and providing individuals with a comprehensive report on the results which can help clarify diagnoses and treatment needs. Supplemental measures may also be given to caregivers in order to gather more information on a child’s social developmental history.

What does treatment look like for autism?

Treatment for autistic individuals varies significantly based on treatment need. Therapy isn’t about making someone “less autistic”, it is more about embracing neurodivergence, improving coping strategies, and social skills building. For example, an individual with autism may want to improve their ability in handling stressful situations and social interactions. Treatment would be comprised of evidence-based strategies that will increase distress tolerance and refine social skills. It is common for treatment to include social skill role-plays and practice in the outside world, whether it be initiating a conversation with a store clerk or practicing an appropriate back-and-forth conversation with a peer. Cognitive flexibility, distress tolerance, effective communication skills, and adaptive coping strategies are all focus points in treatment.
